Comparing Gas and Electric
Tankless Water Heaters

What do you think the future holds in store for energy users?

It's almost certain that energy prices will rise and almost everything in the near future will be powered by electricity, including home heating, hot water and cars.

Countries like Germany have already emparked on an agressive energy policy that encourages green power sources and big cuts in energy use. They are giving us a glimps into our own future with homes and buildings that produce solar power and are insulated to the point of zero need for interior heat

Comparing gas and electric - A good rule of thumb is 10 years
A Department of Energy survey will give average costs of natural gas and electricity but you need to find prices for your state and county. Also keep in mind that prices vary seasonally - gas is much higher in the colder months.

Another thing to note is that utility rates are going up; slightly for electricity, so far. For gas, prices have doubled in the last decade and rising fast as reserves decline.

This is why a 10-year projection is better way to make a choice:
Installation cost + 10-year utility costs = Comparison

Example:
This compares a natural gas and electric model of the same size.

ELECTRIC
At 23kw and using $0.09/kwh
1 hr hot water per day = $7081 + $900 (installed) = $7981 /10-year cost

GAS
At 0.84 therm/hr and using $1.65 per therm
1 hr hot water per day = $5074 + $2500 (installed) = $7574 /10-year cost

This is just an example, your figures will nodoubt be different.
